Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, most notably the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
His passing follows shortly after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping form-fitting garments made him a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
- Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
- Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
- Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
The fashion world mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose influence on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
