Arne Slot Asserts He Feels Secure and Has Liverpool's Backing After PSV Eindhoven Loss
The Liverpool head coach admitted that it was understandable for doubts to be asked about his future following another convincing defeat against the Dutch champions.
The Reds endured their 9th defeat in twelve matches, marking the club's poorest run since being demoted in 1953-54.
They were outplayed by the Dutch league champions on a difficult evening at their home ground.
“I am feeling safe, I'm fine, I have got plenty of support from the top,” the coach commented.
“It would be nice to turn it around and earn three points obviously but if you are coaching a team and not doing well then it's expected that people question you.”
He noted, “I am OK with my role. It is not the initial instance I've found myself in a difficult position but it's crucial that we changed our fortunes.”
Discussions with The Board
When asked to elaborate on his dialogues with the club's leadership, Slot explained:
“We communicate frequently. They assist for the squad and for me and those talks happen but they aren't calling me every single minute each day to say they have faith in me.”
He mentioned, “In the normal conversations we have I perceive the confidence. However I've not talked to them since this defeat yet so we'll see.”
Recurring Failings and Squad Reaction
The manager lamented familiar weaknesses from his team in their Champions League defeat, specifically poor finishing and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, player Jones was more forthright in his evaluation of the team's situation.
“I haven't got the answers. Truthfully, I don’t. I'm telling that to all,” Jones remarked.
“It’s just unacceptable. I don’t even have to wait to consider it. I’m past feeling anger inside. I’m at the point now where I simply lack the vocabulary.”
He added, “It's difficult because I’m playing for the club I love. I'm a supporter, and I've watched this club for years.”
“In recent memory, I've not seen a Liverpool team experiencing a phase like this with outcomes this poor.”
Jones finished, “But we continue to wear that badge on our chest. And as long as it is gone, we'll continue to fight.”
“We will attempt to help the side return to the top, demonstrate to all again what this club is about and why people call it the top club in the world.”
“But right now, we're in trouble and it needs to change.”
