Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment

Democratic officials demonstrated fury after former President Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and asserted they should be taken into custody and punished "through capital punishment" following their posting of a contentious video.

The Recording That Sparked the Controversy

The clip, published on Tuesday, features six Democratic elected officials who formerly served in armed forces or security capacities.

"Like us, you all made an oath to defend and support this national charter," the officials declared in the short video. "And right now, the risks to our constitution aren't just from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can reject improper directives, you can decline unlawful commands, you must refuse unlawful commands. No one has to execute directives that break the statutes or our constitution."

The Former President's Incensed Reply

The clip reportedly prompt a heated reply from the previous commander-in-chief.

On later in the week, Trump published on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another publication, he declared: "This is really serious, and Risky to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent post, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Opposition Officials React

Following Trump's statements on that day, Democratic leadership issued a joint declaration denouncing the comments.

"Violent politics has no role in the United States," they declared. "Representatives who were featured in the video all acted our United States with tremendous loyalty and excellence. We strongly censure Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous death threats against congressional representatives, and call on GOP representatives to strongly do the same."

The opposition officials also said that they had been in contact with law enforcement "to ensure the protection of these representatives and their families."

"Donald Trump must right away take down these unhinged social media posts and recant his violent rhetoric before he leads to violence," the statement continued.

Officials' Firm Response

The officials who appeared in the video also published a statement.

"We identify as veterans and defense specialists who value this nation and swore an vow to defend and defend the founding document of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we aim to honor it. No threat, coercion, or incitement will stop us from that fundamental responsibility."

"The significant point is that the president views it subject to penalty by death for us to reiterate the statutes," they added. "Armed forces members should recognize that we have their backs as they execute their oath to the constitution and responsibility to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They stated: "All citizens must come together and denounce the former president's calls for our death and political violence. This is a time for ethical certainty."

More Partisan Comments

The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's comments and shared on online networks: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is requesting the death of public representatives."

He added: "This represents an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, every American – regardless of party – should condemn this immediately and absolutely."

The Conservative official supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "This represents very harmful, you have leading members of the government advising soldiers to disobey orders, I think that represents without precedent in American history."

The Conservative representative also allegedly told media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the offense of treason" but that "lawyers have to examine the wording and establish all that."

Administration Response

During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when inquired by a journalist, "Does the president want to kill members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson responded: "Certainly not."

"Let's be clear about what the president is responding to," the official declared. "We see active officials of the US Congress who coordinated to arrange a digital communication to personnel of the American armed forces, to serving soldiers advising them to defy the commander in chief's lawful orders."

She added: "The integrity of our armed forces relies on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can result in casualties, it can cause chaos, and precisely what these elected officials ... are fundamentally promoting."
