Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” he added. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD shared security footage earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt were reported.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.
“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.
Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was expected to be a key part of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while healing from his surgery.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in last year and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in March.
