Our Dominik Diamond Alternative Video Game of the Year Awards for The Past Year
Well, how was the past year in your household? Could it be described as all as good as people post on online? Packed with academic success for the children and riotous dress-up gatherings for the grownups? Or was it a sea of letdowns with only occasional enjoyable flotsam? And was any of it authentic, or is everyone now digitally altered AI slop beings with unrealistic teeth?
I have gathered the family for a reflection, whether they wanted to or not, to discuss the crucial thing in a calendar year: which video games we played the most. Without further ado:
Release First Daughter Played the Most
Horizon Zero Dawn
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"You can't expect my definitive list."
Meanwhile, on mobile, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "attempting to locate adequate healthcare."
"Virtually?"
"In the actual world."
Game Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I have no interest in games on my phone." He took umbrage that I suggested it. Fair enough.
Game Third Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She's attempting to get into theatre school, but when she took a break from vocals, she was playing Resident Evil. She also spoke at length in great detail about her achievements on The Sims, where the Shark has a blooming utopia with significantly better healthcare than her eldest sister has outside the game.
Game the Wife Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at 60% completion and finished the year at eighty-two percent. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. On her phone: something called Woodle, where you have to unscrew pins.
Game I Teased My Kids About My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Every time I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a persistent critic. When he protests, I reply that I am doing this to toughen him up so he can be a man and play games for mature audiences. It's a classic Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Impressive Gaming Family Member This Year
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is unstoppable. Superior than I was at Dancing Stage MegaMix in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
It was in a league of its own to the hours I spent on this remarkably well-crafted card game competitive game, with its constantly evolving range of cards and game variations.
Title I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The worst thing about games that endlessly add to their range is you wake up one day and understand it is all just an attempt to suck you into fear-of-missing-out driven microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it went into the bin.
Title I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Excellent reinvention of a iconic franchise. Captivating atmosphere from the beginning. I wish I could dispatch my demons so effectively in real life.
Game I Wish I Had Played More (Puzzle-Focused Edition)
Blue Prince
I decline to rush this stunning, original game and I just lacked the focused attention to give it what it required earlier this year. With holiday guests over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the wee small hours after appropriate hospitality.
Game That Kept Me Sane When I Needed It
Balatro
I acknowledge Balatro was 2024’s sleeper hit, but I was late to it. And it is remarkable. It just gets absolutely everything right. Crazy Poker is a wonderful concept, but the abilities behind the different joker cards are so creative it has become a game I literally would play constantly. Throw in the charm of the card design, and this is an absolute pinnacle of gaming. I dream of being stuck in a small space for hours just so I have nothing to do but play it.
Game I Got the Most Flak For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I received a minor pile-on when I critiqued how a specific bug in another game ruined the experience for me, but that other title is still a colossal gaming achievement in terms of production values – which I appreciated even more after playing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the commenter who took the time to contact me to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I mention that as written, because I appreciate the effort, and they are obviously an excellent judge of character.
Game Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a bastard-hard non-linear thing and don’t tell me guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "figure it out". How delightful. I get that it looks ace and is flawless if you are into this kind of thing, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I desire less in my adulthood. I was around back when all games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was fine when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many outdated things.
Biggest Gaming Controversy of 2025
Toss-up between questionable alliances that raised eyebrows, and high launch costs. Both ethically dubious and concerning.
Games I Would Name My Children After, Were I I Was Ever Foolish Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names shouted from the doorstep at bedtime.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Seriously. I don’t know if it’s because of button mashing or doomscrolling, but it is sore like hellfire in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs insured back in the 90s.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to stretch time until the end of days.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
