The people of Israel mark second anniversary of October 7th incident as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations advance
Israelis have come together throughout the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-led assault on October 7th, 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The assault led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single deadliest day for Jewish people since the World War II.
Israel responded by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"Our bloodthirsty opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.
He also promised to "realize all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will no longer create a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The government authorities delayed state commemorations until mid-October - after the end of the religious holiday season - but events still occurred around the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was televised across Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a silent tribute was respected throughout the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, both sides' delegations convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to discuss the provisions of the proposal.
A high-ranking Palestinian official familiar with the discussions said that an night meeting of mediated discussions started at 7 PM local time.
The representative stated the earlier meeting finished without significant progress, due to differences over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not restart hostilities after the opening period of the agreement.
He added that the negotiations are "challenging and have still not achieve any real breakthrough," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Key Issues in Negotiations
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The exchange of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of troops from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies deliveries
- Future administration of the region
Citizen Sentiment
In the city's public square that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother survived the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were killed and dozens more were abducted by Hamas militants - explained: "No location feels like home anymore and until all the hostages return none of us will have peace of mind."
"Once we see everyone home again, we can breathe anew. Then we can start to recover," she added.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their solidarity for the families of the hostages. Israel says forty-eight remain in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.
Protester Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do every compromise required for the hostages to return. But we really want promises that we will be safe."
Surveys now frequently demonstrate that approximately 70% of Israelis desire the war to finish in exchange for the liberation of the hostages.
Gaza Situation
At the area of the gathering, grieving people gathered to remember the victims.
From that location, the noise of military attacks and explosions could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the intense Israeli attacks continued.
In Gaza City, bombardments were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, Rimal and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwest.
"Once the evening falls, the fear appears with it," displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli bombing last year, explained.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the attacks. During nighttime we are sleeping together, clinging, especially my little child who places his head on me throughout the night."
"Every second we look at the updates to see developments. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."
Medical Situation
The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had taken in the corpses of six people by the daytime, including a trio who died in an Israeli strike in the south part district.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of the city reported another two fatalities had been brought there. An individual was died by Israeli forces while seeking help to the south, medics reported.
